WHERE WE WORK
United States
21st
Century has its headquarters in Seattle, Washington, USA. More that
100,000 East African immigrants and refugees are now living in the
Seattle area and the need for intervention and assistance is great.
We provide services that not help immigrants find housing, become
employed, access the health care and education systems, but also
help them gain a new sense of community and belonging. We focus on
youth because they are the future.
Africa
In Africa, 21st
Century (GPA)
focuses on basic human services (water, health, economic
development, and education) for the pastoral communities in Liban
Zone of Somali Regional State, Ethiopia. GPA’s vision is to provide
technical assistance, tools, training, and market access necessary
for pastoralist communities in this area to take change of their
future and break the cycle of poverty and sufferings. Pastoral
communities in Ethiopia inhabit more than half of the total area of
the country. They are one of the most marginalized people in the
country and lack the basic socio – economic services despite the
potential resources of the region.
In the last two decades, there have been encouraging efforts by the
government and others that aim at improving the livelihoods of the
pastoralist and agro – pastoralist communities by investing on basic
socio – economic infrastructures and slowly improving access to
health, education, clean water, roads, private investment, and
rural and urban development,. Unfortunately, these efforts are
unable to reach significant numbers of the pastoral communities when
compared with the demand for services.
It is with this understanding and concern, side by side with the
government’s efforts, that international and local non –governmental
organizations (NGOs) are working hard to address the basic problems
that adversely affect the livelihood of these pastoral communities.
